Safe Homes Pledge

Dear Parents:

In the wake of the recent events in the area, Pen Argyl High School SADD is distributing the Safe Homes Pledge to all families in the district. This, valuable nationwide program is pledge for parents to take stating their coalition against underage drinking. In taking this pledge, you, as a parent, are guaranteeing your commitment to not serve alcohol to minors, to teach your children the dangers of drinking, and to always serve as a good role model for your children to follow.

Recent surveys show that most children say their greatest reason for not smoking or using alcohol is their parents' influence in their life. In teaching your children the risks of dangerous decisions, your could save their lives.

With this in mind, we ask that you TAKE THE PLEDGE!

Please sign and remove the bottom portion of the enclosed pledge and return it to the school that your child attends. There will be boxes in the main office of each building in the district to collect the pledges. We will then proceed to compose a list of names of each family that participates in the program. If you wish to NOT be included in that list, please do NOT sign on the line provided.

Thank you,

Pen Argyl High School Students Against Destructive Decisions

Adapted from the Valley Youth House-Safe Homes Program

IF YOU'RE AN ALERT HIGH SCHOOL PARENT...
Take the Pledge!
1. Not to allow parties or gatherings in your home when you are not there.
2. Not to serve or allow underage youth to consume alcohol in your home.
3. Not to allow the use of illegal drugs in your home.
4. Not to allow underage smoking on your premises.

IF YOU'RE A CONCERNED MIDDLE SCHOOL PARENT...
Take the Pledge!
1. Be a good role model or example. your habits and attitudes may strongly influence your child's ideas about alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs.
2. Know who your child's friends are. And, if possible, their parents. Next to you, peers are the biggest influence on your child at this age.
3. Make family rules. It's helpful when you make specific family rules about your child not using alcohol or other drugs or smoking cigarettes. And it's helpful to tell your child the consequences of using them.

IF YOU'RE A CAREFUL ELEMENTARY SCHOOL PARENT...
Take the Pledge!
1. Teach your child the risks of alcohol and other drug use. Because many adults drink alcohol without encountering problems, some children may be confused about the risks they face if they drink alcohol.
2. Help your child deal with peer pressure. A child who has been taught to be gentle and loving may need your "permission" to say no to negative peer pressure.
3. Encourage healthy, creative activities. Hobbies, school events, and other activities may prevent your child from using alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs out of boredom.

Share in the mutual support safe homes parents enjoy.
