The 70's

In 1970, the grapplers from Pen Argyl had their first winning season with a record of 10-4; this being the best record up to this point. In 1971 the Knights won six matches straight to end the season with a record of 8-5-1. Jim Santo advanced to the Lehigh-Northampton League Sectional Tournament and advanced to the District XI Tournament. In 1972, the wrestling team once again finished their season with a winning record of 8-6. In 1972, Jim Santo became our first Northeast Regional Champion and Bill Hicks won the League Championship. In 1973, the team did not fare as well ending up with an overall record of 4-10. In 1974, the Knights once again returned to their winning ways, finishing the season 7-6-1. The 1975 season proved to be the best in years. The team finished the season with an overall record of 10-4. Mike Cesare was also a District XI Champion that year. The 1976 season proved to be the best season ever with an overall record of 12-2. The 1976 team was led by senior Mike Cesare who finished third in the state tournament. This season also proved to be a memorable one as Knights' coach Jim Tiernan, gained his 100th win. The 1977 season was not the best season ever; but the team had another good year (8-8), although losing six seniors. The 1978 season was once again another winning season for the Pen Argyl grapplers with an overall record of 8-5. The 1978 grapplers won the team title at the Delaware Valley Christmas tournament. The 1979 season was a season of injury. Coach Tiernan said "We did the best with what we had" and that they did, finishing with another winning season ending with a record of 9-7.
