In 1965, Pen Argyl High School added wrestling as another sport in its repertoire. In 1965, Bob Lakey assisted by Carl Millard led Pen Argyl's wrestlers into combat. Although inexperienced, these young men had the will to win and managed to go 3-5 .

In 1966, Coach Lakey and his wrestlers did not fare as well, ending the year with a record of 2-12 . Leroy Lieberman finished the year 10-2-2 with the best record on the team. In 1967, James Tiernan became the second wrestling coach at Pen Argyl, with a 4-10 inaugural season. The 1967 season was also the first year Pen Argyl sent wrestlers to advanced competition. Dave Conrad advanced to District Semifinals at 88 pounds. In 1968 the wrestling team finished 6-7-1. In 1969 the team finished 6-7, and Steve Detweiler became a District XI Champion, the first from Pen Argyl.
